Remote adoption

What is remote adoption?

Remote adoption is a deal between the donor, who would like to help a certain cat financially and the Slovenian Society for Protecting Animals in Need that is taking care of the cat. Remote adopter can be a person or a company.

Why do we need remote adoptions?

Many of our protégés cannot find a new home or only find it after a long search due to various reasons. Taking care of such cats is quite a burden, as from the day the cats come to stay with us, we receive no funds from the authorities. Food, sand, anti-parasite medicine, tests, equipment and potential veterinary care are very expensive.

That is why we need funds, and if you feel that we are doing a good job, we would kindly ask you to help us. Kind words and compliments are more than welcome but they cannot fill hungry stomachs, they cannot buy medicine, pay for the veterinarians or settle the food, sand, testing, dry mat and other urgent bills. In real terms: when we have a medium workload, we generally use around 40 kilos of cat kibble per week. As animals taken in from the streets are generally not physically well, we want to ensure they get quality food which costs a bit more. All cats we receive that are old enough are taken to be neutered or spayed (some of these fees are paid by the municipalities, the others by us). As you know, these operations are not the cheapest (for cats, it is from 40 to 60 €). We ensure that the cats receive solid veterinary care in case of injuries or diseases, which is also quite expensive.

Shouldn‘t we euthanize sick and/or injured cats?

Perhaps you are now thinking of those eccentric cats, too marked by harsh street-life. Perhaps you are wondering if there is any point in trying with these creatures. When an animal is so strongly mentally damaged, that even experience and knowledge do not help, we of course opt for euthanasia. But such cases are very rare. Mostly the scared cats get used to living with humans. With familiar people and suitable care, they can lead happy and contented lives. They can be happy, playful, trusting and satisfied animals. Euthanizing such cats would be uncalled for and against all of our principles.

Which cats can be remote pets?

All of the cats that have been staying with us for more than a month can be remote pets. Most will one day proudly enter new homes, but some will for this or that behavioural peculiarity stay with us their entire lives.

You can find the current list of cats available for remote adoption in the right hand column.

What does the remote adopter receive in exchange for their donation?

We promise the remote adopters that we will email them once a month to thank them for their support. If they so desire and specify, we can also list them on our webpage.

How much money is donated for an individual cat?

You can choose the monthly amount yourself. Even a small donation (for example 1 € a month) will show support for our way of working. Our initial goal is to obtain enough remote adopters to receive at least 2 € per day per cat. This would broadly cover the most basic expenses of regular care.

How to adopt a ‘remote pet’?

Choose a cat that you would like to help financially. Then fill out the online agreement about the remote adoption (donation). And then transfer the selected amount every month. In cases where a company decides for remote adoption, we can also publish a link to your webpage.

After receiving your data, we will expect your transfers until you withdraw from the agreement.

Where should I transfer the funds?

The monthly funds can be transferred to: SI56 0600 0098 0940 638 (Banka Celje), Društvo za pomoč živalim v stiski SLO, Groharjeva ulica 8, 3000 Celje. For intent/purpose, write ''donacija - posvojitev na daljavo'', and as a reference, you can put in the date or leave it blank. If your electronic banking demands that you enter a reference, you can put in any number, as your transfer will be identified from other data and not the reference.

How to cancel the remote adoption agreement?

If you wish to cancel the agreement, send us an email stating that you wish to cancel the agreement from the email address used when filling out the online form. If your transfers stop and you do not cancel the agreement, we will understand this to mean that you still want to remain a remote adopter (donor), but you cannot contribute due to current financial difficulties. Then we will send you two reminders via email and expect that at least two months after the last donation, donations will continue and that you will also contribute the missing amounts. If that does not happen, we will cancel the remote adoption agreement and stop sending you thank you emails and other information.

What happens when my adoptee finds a home?

In such a case the agreement is cancelled automatically. If you would still like to support our efforts, you can fill out a new online agreement for another animal in the list.

Can I visit my remote adoptee?

If it is not a very shy cat, such visits are of course possible. We do expect the visitors to make a formal arrangement in advance for any proposed visit.
